The deployment of cobots, robotic applications that can collaborate safely with humans, is the next step in automation of histopathology labs. A first application is the automatic transport of pathological tissue between two instruments in order to optimize the workflow in the histopathology lab.

After almost two years of development and testing, the cobot setup is ready to impplement in the lab. In the video you can see how the application works. We have developed this installation and programmed the Universal Robots.

Optimal flow

In practice, the cobot handles the processing of the cassettes in the feed machines. In many labs, the passage of tissue still takes place at night, which creates backlogs. By continuously feeding the automatic feeder and embedding machine, the SmartConnect cobot ensures a continuous flow of cassettes through the lab throughout the day. This gives a constant flow of cassettes that the analysts can handle better than one batch with hundreds of cassettes at once. This way the lead time is optimized.

Track & Trace

Patient files must never be lost, of course not in an automated process, but then the sample flow can be better controlled by track & trace. The system also monitors the environmental conditions with temperature as an important parameter. In the unlikely event that a temperature that is too high or too low is measured, a message will be sent. All data is also stored for this to be able to look back when the temperature is below or above a certain value. This is an extra guarantee for quality.
